Air-conditioning rewards

If you’re replacing or purchasing a new air-conditioner, help manage peak demand by installing a PeakSmart air-conditioner. You’ll be rewarded by up to $400 for choosing PeakSmart!

Rewards for energy efficient air-conditioning

When the temperature rises in Queensland, many homes and businesses switch on their air-conditioners at the same time. When this is combined with an increase in use of pool pumps and everyday appliances, it puts stress on the electricity network. We call this ‘peak demand’.
We have created some innovative programs to help manage peak demand. When we save energy, it means less need to build new electricity infrastructure and, ultimately, lower power bills for you.
One way you can save energy and get real rewards for your home or business is by installing Peak Smart air-conditioning. Keep reading, instructions on how to claim are below.
Your reward will depend on the cooling capacity of your PeakSmart air-conditioner.

What is PeakSmart air-conditioning?

PeakSmart air-conditioning helps reduce peak demand by dropping your air-conditioner into a lower performance mode when the network is under stress. We call this a Peak Smart event. You can buy a new PeakSmart air-conditioner or, in some cases, you may be able to add a signal receiver to your existing air-conditioning.

The peak smart signal receiver on your air-conditioner will get a ‘message’ from the network, telling it there is pressure on the network. When this occurs, your air-conditioner will operate similarly to the economy setting.

Queensland’s electricity network is robust, so Peak Smart events may only occur on a few occasions per year. The technology is designed to be ‘set and forget’ so you won’t have to do anything or notice a difference to your comfort.

As we increasingly rely on electricity as part of our everyday lives, energy use during peak times continues to rise. Millions of dollars are spent on extra electricity infrastructure to cater for these peak times. PeakSmart helps us use our network more efficiently, and is one of our solutions for managing peak demand. Read more about peak demand here.
Households and businesses can claim a reward for multiple PeakSmart enabled air-conditioners where a signal receiver is installed. However if claim numbers are greater than five, this will be reviewed and approved at our discretion.
PeakSmart rewards are deposited into your nominated bank account via EFT transfer. You’ll receive an email 10 days after the transfer has been made. If you’ve received an email, please review your bank statement to confirm the payment has been made within this timeframe.
It works via a signal receiver – a small device installed in the PeakSmart air-conditioner(s). A signal is sent remotely from us via your power supply that tells the air-conditioner to cap its energy consumption on occasions when the network reaches peak demand. This is only likely to happen a few times a year. We call this a ‘PeakSmart event’. PeakSmart air-conditioning has been designed by major air-conditioning manufacturers and adheres to industry standards. The technology is designed to be ‘set and forget’. You won’t have to do anything and you won’t notice a difference to your comfort. The effect is similar to your air-conditioner being in economy mode.
No. The signal receiver can be activated on any setting and temperature.
We’ll only activate the signal receiver on occasions when the electricity network reaches peak demand. In the last 12 months, signal receivers have only been activated a few times. Learn more about PeakSmart events here.
Some PeakSmart enabled air-conditioners have a Demand Response Mode (DRM) display on the indoor unit. The display could be labelled DRM1, DRM2, or DRM3, but wording may differ between models. Some models do not have a display mode. You may be interested to know if your air-conditioner goes into DRM, but no action will be required by you.
When your air-conditioner unit goes into a Demand Response Mode you’re unable to reverse the function by changing temperature settings or other actions.
You’re still eligible for your reward, we just need your correct bank details. Please submit a new application with the correct bank details and we’ll process your application.
Your signal receiver will be provided by your air-conditioning retailer or installer when you purchase a PeakSmart air-conditioner. If your retailer didn’t provide you with a signal receiver, please contact your installer to provide you with one.
No. You’ll need to arrange and cover the cost for a qualified air-conditioning installer to fit your PeakSmart air-conditioner(s). The signal receiver is designed for simple installation and is not expected to add much time to the process. Your PeakSmart reward should help cover the cost of installation.
Please call us on 13 12 53 to discuss your signal receiver query.
If you’re experiencing difficulties with submitting your online reward application, please contact 13 12 53 for assistance.
If you decide to leave the PeakSmart program you’ll need to cover the cost of your own electrician to remove the signal receiver. Please contact us at or on 13 12 53. We’ll arrange for a pre-paid return post bag to be sent so you can return the signal receiver to us.
