What is a Split System Aircon?
A split system air conditioner is an Air Conditioning system that has an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (Evaporator). The outdoor unit is installed on or near the exterior wall of this room that you would like to cool. This unit houses the compressor, condenser coil and the growth coil or capillary tubing. Compressors these days run on an Inverter technology which is much more energy efficient than the old type of compressor.
The sleek-looking indoor unit contains the cooling coil, a very long blower, and an air filter.

How does a Split System work?
Split systems come in many different forms and brands, from Fujitsu Split system to Daikin split system multi head units, but they all rely on the same principal when cooling and heating.
First the refrigerant (R32 now days) is compressed by a small scroll compressor inverter and run through a condenser to eliminate as much heat as possible outside. This is the part of the split system aircon that sits outside in the ambient air.
This cooled pressurised liquid is then pumped-up and pair coiled through the wall and into the indoor unit, which is called the evaporator. The liquid gas can now expand from liquid to gas through the capillaries of the head unit which causes cooling. A fan in the indoor unit blows the indoor air past the evaporator coil and circulates the air in the room, thereby cooling the room down.
The process is repeated in a loop and with the help of a thermostat the inverter slows down or speeds up the process to keep the room at a specific temperature.
Heating is done in the same way, where a value in the split system basically switches the pipes around, allowing the system to work in reverse.
