Split System Air Conditioner
What is a Split System Aircon?
A split system air conditioner is an Air Conditioning system that has an outdoor unit (condenser) and an indoor unit (Evaporator). The outdoor unit is installed on or near the exterior wall of this room that you would like to cool. This unit houses the compressor, condenser coil and the growth coil or capillary tubing. Compressors these days run on an Inverter technology which is much more energy efficient than the old type of compressor.
The sleek-looking indoor unit contains the cooling coil, a very long blower, and an air filter.
Installation of a split air conditioner is far easier than other installation due no ductwork. Instead, the indoor and outdoor units are connected with a set of electrical, tubing and wires.
Usually ductwork in traditional A/C units generally increases energy costs, as most centralized A/C units lose a lot of energy due to heat exchange from the air duct system. Without a system of ducts, there is very little prospect for heat or energy loss in a split air conditioner system.
This kind of air conditioner system has many benefits over traditional A/Cs. These benefits include:
- Noise elimination – Unlike box units, split system air conditioning parts such as the compressor and fan, are located away from the area that is being cooled, thus reducing the source of noise.
- Opt for a multi-split – Split systems are versatile systems that has the option of cooling multiple areas with a number of indoor units connected to one outdoor unit. Therefore, making it effortless to cool multiple rooms without the need of ductwork – such as a ducted system.
Why is a Split System Air Conditioner better?
A split system air conditioner is an efficient and cost-effective way to cool your house. Despite the initial cost of this type of air conditioner, which requires expert installation than other types such as window units. The sum of money saved in the long run in your electricity bills, as well as the durability of this type of unit, will make it worth your while.

How does a Split System work?
Split systems come in many different forms and brands, from Fujitsu Split system to Daikin split system multi head units, but they all rely on the same principal when cooling and heating.
First the refrigerant (R32 now days) is compressed by a small scroll compressor inverter and run through a condenser to eliminate as much heat as possible outside. This is the part of the split system aircon that sits outside in the ambient air.
This cooled pressurised liquid is then pumped-up and pair coiled through the wall and into the indoor unit, which is called the evaporator. The liquid gas can now expand from liquid to gas through the capillaries of the head unit which causes cooling. A fan in the indoor unit blows the indoor air past the evaporator coil and circulates the air in the room, thereby cooling the room down.
The process is repeated in a loop and with the help of a thermostat the inverter slows down or speeds up the process to keep the room at a specific temperature.
Heating is done in the same way, where a value in the split system basically switches the pipes around, allowing the system to work in reverse.
